Celebrated New Zealand cartoonist, commentator and political satirist Peter Bromhead promises characteristic humour, caustic wit and topical political insights in his exhibition Retrospective Cartoon Exhibition at Waiariki Institute of Technology.
The show includes important drawings, portraits and coloured limited-edition prints, from a combination of both historical and contemporary works.
Bromhead is one of New Zealand’s most respected and awarded cartoonists with ten Qantas media awards to his credit. Additionally, he has received the Prince Hendrik Medal of Honour and the MNZM for his services to cartooning.
In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Qantas prize for outstanding contribution to the print and media industry.
The artist’s work is represented in many prominent public gallery collections, including The Auckland Art Gallery and Te Papa, and is also well documented in publications internationally, such as Daryl Cagle’s book The Best Cartoons of the Year 2008 published in the USA. New Zealand publications include Bromhead’s View, 1999 and Ten Years Hard Labour, 1996.
With a considerable local and international reputation, Bromhead’s work is both well sought after and highly collectable.
The cartoonist currently draws and writes for the business section of the NZ Herald and produces editorial and pocket cartoons for The Herald on Sunday and various provincial newspapers.
In addition to acquiring a significant work of art, Retrospective Cartoon Exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity to obtain a small part of New Zealand’s social history.
Peter Bromhead is the “Designer in Residence” for 2010 at Waiariki Institute of Technology lecturing various subjects in the arts, media, spatial design and interior design/CAD courses.

A pathway to the future – while preserving the past
A qualification to empower young Maori, is how arts lecturer, Eugene Kara, describes
Waiariki’s Institute of Technology’s new Certificate in Ngā Mahi Whakairo.
It opens up the opportunity for students to build a creative future, while helping to protect the past.
“This course will empower young Maori with the necessary skills to get through the tough times and give them a place to study in society”, Mr Kara says.
The 18-week qualification teaches the skills that could lead to acceptance into Te Puia’s prestigious Diploma in Whakairo Rakau; a career as a designer/maker of Maori art; or work in the fields of Taonga conservation and restoration in a marae or museum environment.
The Certificate in Ngā Mahi Whakairo is also a pathway to art degrees or further study in Maori and indigenous development at Waiariki and is an opportunity equally suited to those moving on from high school or Te Kura Kaupapa, as well as mature students who are interested in an introduction to Maori art.
If you carve now, or wish to learn, this is an ideal place to start.
Nau mai, haere mai.
