About the Qualification

This certificate introduces aspects of Māori visual culture within the context of Ngā Mahi Whakairo. Students will develop the skills and techniques required to understand and apply the appropriate use of Māori design.
Students have the option of creating a portfolio that can be used to apply for further study at Te Puia, the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute or the Diploma in Art and Design at Waiariki.
Graduates will be able to:
• construct two-dimensional renderings of Māori design;
• discuss specific aspects of Māori carving styles in relation to the Whare Tupuna;
• identify and describe the uses, history and values found in a cultural heritage site; and
• produce replicas of an original work using a variety of mould-making techniques.
